In celebration of Juneteenth, Kahlil Greene is here to share the history and significance of the national holiday along with the design and meaning behind its flag, featuring artwork by Dennis Owusu-Ansa.

The Juneteenth flag was invented by Ben Haith, leader of The National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States on June 19, 1865.

Unlike the green, red and black pan-African flag, which celebrates the entire African diaspora, this flag was made specifically for Black Americans in recognition of a monumental national achievement.
